The trench warfare started on September 15, 1914 when Germany began to dig the first trenches. These trenches were made in a parallel zigzag line so that the bombings would not take down the whole trench. They had front line trenches, second line support trenches, and communication trenches that transported supplies and food to the soldiers.
These trenches were very secure containing barbed wire, board walks, sand bags, etc. All these things they used were benefits to them so that it will be harder for the enemy to get to them, so they would die faster as well.

At a certain time in the beginning of the war, food became very scarce. Many soldiers died due to starvation. They were only allowed to eat 10 oz of meat, and 8 oz of vegetables a day. Their food ranged from chocolate to fish, and even to soup. Yet, getting and eating the food was not the only problem. The way the trenches were lined up caused a big problem for the soldiers in the front line.
Transportation of the food was very difficult as well. the communication trenches (which lied in the back) had to get the food to the front line trenches, and by the time they got there, the bread was usually stale and hard.
Eventually, the food issue got so bad that the cities had to start preserving food so that they can send more food to the soldiers at war. They used propaganda to convince the civilians that they need to eat everything off their plate because there are many soldiers starving in war.

Propaganda: Food was very scarce during the trench warfare, men were starving and eating each other just so they could live, so this propaganda was showing us that we need to save food and make it last because there are men that are starving and feeding on each other. It shows that the plate is empty because they don't want you to waste food, they want you to eat it all and/or preserve it.
Propaganda:
This photo is promoting men to join the trench warfare because so many are dying in war and they need the help to win the war. As you can see the man in the front in British, so it is the British that needs the help during the war. There is only a few men behind him showing that they need the help.

The commanders played a big part in the war, leading the men to war and making sure that the job gets done. There was a lot more commanders/leaders in this war, but the main ones were Joseph Joffre, Erich Von Falkenhayn, Tsar Nicholas ii, and Winston Churchill.
Commanders:
Joseph Joffre
- Joseph Joffre had many positions like Chief of the General Staff, Marshal of France, commander-in-chief of the French army, then to President of the Allied War Council.
- His crowning achievement was to win the battle of Marne, and he had accomplished it. He won that war in September 1914 and was the first French general to win the German army.
- He was the reason a deeply flawed plan XVII of blueprint invaded Germany, and he was able to stay calm through it all and revive himself from defeat.
Erich Von Falkenhayn
- Erich Von Falkenhayn was a military instructor in China, a member of the German staff in China, served on the general staff, minister of war of Prussia, and then became Chief of Staff.
- He launched the battle of Verdun and it looked to be successful.
- He lost many battles and was removed from his positions many times.
Tsar Nicholas II
1.He was one of the last Russian emperor.
2. He improved Russia’s entry into world war 1.
3.Russia lost a lot of men 3.3 million to be exact. But he didn’t do anything about it and at the end they overthrew him.
Winston Churchill
1.Best known as the prime minister of world war 2.
2.He persuaded his career as a war correspondent.
3.He had a unsuccessful start in world war 2. But then he led the UK into a national coalition.
4.”we shall defend our land, whatever the cost may be,we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall in the hills; we shall never surrender” Which he wants his people to never quit to always fight for their land.
